Story

Nunc Sumus began with a simple experience: walking through a fairground at night.

I was surrounded by people, noise and movement, but what stayed with me most was the light. Strings of bulbs stretched above the crowd, giant illuminated rides turned slowly against the dark sky, and everywhere I looked there were glowing circles, reflections, flashes and colors. For a moment, the whole place felt strangely monumental.

Standing there, I started to see the fairground differently.

It almost felt like a modern cathedral.

Not a cathedral built from stone, stained glass and candles, but one made from steel, electricity, music and thousands of artificial lights. The rides rose above the crowd like enormous illuminated structures, while people moved beneath them almost like a procession. Even the constant turning of the wheels began to feel ritualistic.

That feeling became the idea behind Nunc Sumus.

I wanted the music to bring two worlds together that should not naturally belong together: the ancient, solemn sound of Gregorian voices and the pulse of modern electronic music. The Latin gives the song something timeless, while the electronic elements belong completely to the illuminated world of the present.

The repeated words “Nunc sumus” — “We are here now” became especially important to me.

Among all those lights and all those people, I became very aware of how temporary the moment was. The fair would disappear. The lights would be switched off. The crowd would go home. Even this huge glowing world that seemed so powerful at night would soon leave almost nothing behind.

And yet, at that particular moment, it was real.

Perhaps that is why the word “Gloria” found its way into the song. I don't necessarily hear it as religious praise. For me, it is also an expression of wonder — that very human impulse to stand in front of something beautiful, overwhelming and temporary and simply look up.

For a few hours, we build our own cathedrals of light.

We gather beneath them.

We watch them turn against the night.

And then we leave.

Nunc sumus.

For now, we are here.
